Promoting on reddit: why do my photo posts appear like this?

TLDR

I've seen this exact panic a dozen times from people promoting their work on Reddit: half your posts show the pic right in the feed, the other half look like a broken title with nothing attached. The good news? You're almost certainly not being censored or shadow-suppressed. You just mixed two different post types without realizing it, and once you know which is which, this stops being a mystery forever.

Why do some of my photo posts show the image and others just show a title?

Nine times out of ten, it comes down to how the post was created. When you upload an image directly to Reddit - hitting the image/video button in the post composer and picking a file from your device - Reddit hosts it on its own servers (you'll see i.redd.it under the title). Those posts render inline in almost every feed. But if you clicked "link post" instead and pasted a URL to an image hosted somewhere else, like Imgur or your own site, Reddit treats it as a link. Depending on the viewer's platform, that link might show a small thumbnail, nothing at all, or just the bare title until someone clicks through.

So if your pinned post shows the pic directly but your recent posts don't, don't credit the pin - compare the two. My bet: the pin is a direct upload, and the others are link posts to an outside host. The pin isn't special; it just happens to be a different format. You can confirm by tapping edit on your own post or checking what domain shows on it.

Also worth knowing: galleries, video/GIF posts, and crossposts all render a little differently from single images, so don't expect one universal behavior across every post type.

What else can make an image not display, even when the post is fine?

Three more usual suspects, in order of likelihood. First, subreddit rules: some subs require a flair before media shows, force an NSFW tag on everything, or strip previews entirely - and an NSFW-flagged post gets blurred by default for anyone who hasn't opted into seeing that content. Second, the platform mismatch: old Reddit, the official app, and third-party clients each handle previews differently, so a post may look perfect in one and bare in another. Third, and easiest to forget - it can be entirely viewer-side. Your follower might have "blur media" turned on, use an aggressive filter, or be on a buggy app version.

A quick way to rule yourself out: open your post in an incognito browser and check both old Reddit and the app. If the image shows in one of those, the post is fine and the problem is on your follower's end. What you can't control is their settings - but you can control the upload. Always upload directly rather than linking to an image host, don't delete-and-repost repeatedly to "fix" previews (that starts looking spammy fast to mods and filters), and test in incognito before you hit publish.

Ready to make your promo posts actually pop?

If you're a creator expanding beyond Reddit and want a platform built for visual content, live interaction, and showcasing yourself without fighting feed quirks, it's honestly worth checking out XLoveCam - the setup does the presentation work for you. And going back to Reddit: what happens if you fix the post type and it still renders bare for your followers? The simple next step is asking them what device and settings they're on - that conversation usually solves it faster than any workaround.
